Physician Division Chief: Ambulatory Service Line

Medical Staff Henry Ford Macomb Hospitals

A Physician Leader in a medical administrative position with the primary responsibility of assisting Service Line Chairs, VPMA, Chief of Staff, Vice-Chief of Staff, other elected and appointed physician leaders and the Medical Executive Committee (MEC) with performing credentialing/privileging, peer review, governance and communication functions of the medical staff and acting as a liaison between the medical staff and the administration.

Responsibilities

1. Oversee all administratively related activities of the Service Lines that are assigned to the Division Chief for oversight unless otherwise provided by the hospital;
2. Integrate the Service Lines into the primary function of the hospital;
3. Develop and implement Divisional programs, in cooperation with the VPMA and Chief of Staff and certain committees for:
1. evaluation of patient care
2. ongoing monitoring of clinical practice
3. credentials and privileges review
4. continuing medical education
5. utilization review

4. Develop and implement medical staff and hospital policies and procedures that guide and support the physician role in the provision of patient care services.
5. Continuously review the performance of all practitioners (FPPE and OPPE) including advanced practice professionals with clinical privileges and specified services in the division and regularly report the finding of such reviews to the VPMA, Chief of Staff, the MEC and the Quality Committee.
6. Enforce hospital and medical staff by-laws, rules regulations and policies within the Division and recommend initiation of investigations of clinical performance and order consultations to provide performance assessments when appropriate.
7. Appoint and designate chairs for any committees that are necessary for conducting Divisional functions in collaboration with the service line chair or Chief of Staff.
8. Implement any action taken by the MEC or the Board within the Division.
9. Provide leadership in strengthening and enhancing the Division's culture so that it successfully incorporates commitment to excellence and a high degree of collegiality, mutual accountability and continuous performance improvement of all physicians.
10. Support a well designed proactive program for recruiting, developing and training new medical staff leaders from within the Division.
11. Participate in every phase of administration such as assisting with budget and clinical program development, cooperating with administration, nursing services and other clinical services in matters affecting patient care, including personnel, supplies, special regulations, implementation of accreditation requirements, standing orders and electronic health record requirements.
12. Provide input on medical policies of the hospital and facilitate implementation of the Board-approved physician resource development plans.
13. Coordinate and integrate interdepartmental and intradepartmental services and communication.
14. Provide written reports to the MEC at least quarterly concerning:
1. the findings of the division's patient care evaluation and monitoring activities and any resulting actions
2. recommendations for maintaining and improving the quality of care provided in the Division and the hospital
3. policy, rules and regulation changes and accreditation compliance activities
4. any other matters the MEC considers appropriate for reporting

15. Provide reports to the HFMH board and its subcommittees as requested.
16. Provide education to the medical staff in development of leadership skills.
17. Assist the department of medical education in the development of and promotion of continuing medical education programs.

Qualifications

1. Medical staff membership in good standing at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital or attainment of this membership upon job initiation.
2. Previous experience in a significant leadership position such as Service Line chair, section chair, committee chair or medical director.
3. Participation in part-time clinical practice or recent clinical experience preferred. Practice should be in a specialty within the Division.
4. No previous adverse recommendations concerning medical staff appointment or clinical privileges.
5. Previous participation in medical staff leadership training and willingness to continue participation.
6. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within the medical staff and between the medical staff, nursing staff, senior management and the Board.
7. Excellent administrative and communication skills.
8. No appointments to officer or leadership positions in any other medical staff organizations (outside of Henry Ford Health System) while serving as Division Chief at HFMH.
